I am happy to report that I am in the earliest stages of writing a book for Continuum called Key Terms in Philosophy of Art. It's a part of their Key Terms in Philosophy series. It's scheduled to be available in late 2013.

Special Session for the Eastern ASA

We've arranged for a very special session at the 2011 American Society for Aesthetics Eastern Conference (April 8-9, 2011, Philadelphia). Sean D. Kelly and Michael Kelly will be speaking in a session entitled The Value of Art.  

Michael Kelly (UNC Charlotte) is the editor of The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics (both the first and forthcoming second editions) (Oxford University Press). He is also author of Iconoclasm in Aesthetics (Cambridge University Press, 2003), and numerous articles criss-crossing the boundaries between Continental and Analytic aesthetics.  

Sean D. Kelly (Harvard) is co-author (with Hubert Dreyfus) of All Things Shining (Free Press, 2011)—don't miss the associated blog here. He is also author of a number of articles and book chapters on phenomenology, nonconceptual content, etc.

Plenary Speaker for 2011 Eastern ASA - John Hyman

Chris Bartel and I are pleased to report that the plenary speaker for the 2011 American Society for Aesthetics Eastern Conference will be John Hyman!  As many of you know, of course, John is Professor of Aesthetics at The Queens College, Oxford.  He is author of The Objective Eye: colour, form and reality in the theory of art (University of Chicago, 2006), a number of influential articles, and he is the editor of the British Journal of Aesthetics.

The Eastern ASA takes place April 8 - 9, 2011, at The Independence Park Hotel, Philadelphia, PA.

Philosophy of Music Talks at Montclair State U

I'll be chairing a Philosophy of Art session at the New Jersey Regional Philosophical Association Conference, which is held this year at Montclair State University (MSU is 20-30 minutes from Manhattan). The conference will take place on Saturday, Nov. 14,  9AM-5:30PM (registration at 9, sessions begin at 10,  Phil of Art session at 2:40PM).  The location of the phil of art session is University Hall, Room 2007, 2nd Floor.

Papers on any topic in aesthetics are invited, as well as proposals for panels, author-meets-critics, or other special sessions. We welcome volunteers to serve as session chairs and commentators. Papers should not exceed 3000 words, should be accompanied by a 100-word abstract, and must be prepared for blind review. All participants must be members of the American Society for Aesthetics and must register for the conference. a plug for the ASA

This is a plug for the American Society for Aesthetics Eastern Division Meeting (April 4-5, 2008). The Keynote Speaker is Jenefer Robinson; Kwame Anthony Appiah will be delivering the Monroe Beardsley Lecture. Always held in Philly, this is a particularly interesting annual aesthetics conference, with rich Q&A sessions, due in part to the abundance of talented philosophers of art (both faculty and grad students) at Temple. There is also a burgeoning interest in aesthetics at nearby Rowan University. I will be presenting a paper entitled, "A Phenomenological Criticism of D. Raffman's Account of Musical Nuance."
